The revolutionary war was a war fought between america, and its mother-country England. England was taxing the colonies and wasn't giving them any representation. some colonists thought that this was very unfair. Some of the colonists wanted to break away from British rule and become their own country.
However, some people did not want to break free from England. These people were called loyalist. These people wanted to stay with England. Georgia, was the youngest colony, and therefore took more time to want to break free from England. Under British rule, most colonies were rich and powerful, and the loyalists wanted it to stay that way.

Loyalists had many nicknames. This included torries, royalists, and kings friends. British soldiers were often called redcoats or lobster-backs. These names were used to insult them. The groups of people who were loyalists were wealthy people, merchants, some farm families, people with close family members in Britain, and newer colonists.
The patriots treated the loyalists with disrespect. They burned down their houses and left them homeless. They would steal their money, and in extreme cases, murder them or their family. They also did something called tar and feathering. This happened when they poured hot tar on them, and dumped feathers on them.
Overall the way they were treated was unfair, and they were mocked by the patriots for being loyal to Britain. They were called by many nicknames, and many types of people could be a loyalists.
